My name's Shelley and I've recently had my first child; a little girl named Imogen! As a friend of the Ovaltine team, I know loads about why Ovaltine is good for me, I discovered it whilst I was pregnant but I don't know very much about having a baby! I'm going to be posting my weekly ups and downs here for all the world to see, and hopefully you'll enjoy reading about Imogen and me and even help me along the way with your own tips and advice.

Now I have progressed to three meals and several cubes, mixing whatever comes to hand first!

The next phase is to do meals, I think! She is almost 6 months and so a whole new world of opportunity presents itself. I have ordered lots of ingredients including chicken and fish online and am starting to make meal ice cubes as opposed to single veggies. I have found loads of great recipes in well known books but have already started to improvise, especially where quantities of ingredients are concerned!

The problem is everyone says just give her what you have, but I must admit I’m a lazy cook and use jars of sauces for everything. Although, seeing as we both get home at 19:30 at the earliest, I have felt justified! Also, they spend a lot of time and effort developing the right sauce, so I’m sure I couldn’t do it better.

My idea of scratch cooking has always been to chop up an union to add to a sauce! I can’t do that now as they’re too full of additives etc, so have to make my own sauce - but need to even look up how to make a tomato pasta sauce! It makes me a bit ashamed to say so, but at least I am embracing learning to cook to make sure that Imogen has better food than we do! Just hope I can get into the habit before I go back to work so it continues.

Any top tips welcomed!

Weaning

I have started weaning, slightly earlier than six months. Imogen seems ready and I figure I have time to take it slowly and play around with tastes if I start now - if I left it later the nutritional content would be more important so we would need to accelerate the process.

I have a freezer full of different flavour puree in ice cubes; think I’ve been getting a bit carried away and should have enough until she’s 18! She seems to be taking to it quite well.
